The One Tree Farm at FLAME University, Pune is a student run organic farm that practices sustainable agriculture. The farm is an effort of the university that demonstrates its commitment towards sustainability and in the preservation of local agricultural practices.
FLAME University is one of India's first liberal education programs. It offers several novel and cutting edge programs, many of which emphasize multi-disciplinarity and skill based learning.
The One Tree Farm is spread over 1 acre on campus in Lavale valley, in the western part of Pune. The campus is situated in the Western Ghats, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity “hotspot” defined as areas where “exceptional concentrations of endemic species are undergoing exceptional loss of habitat ” by Myers et al. 2000.
The farm relies on ecosystem management as its long term strategy and seeks to improve the fertility of the soil in the area while preventing pests and disease. It does not use any synthetically made chemical fertilizers or pesticides and does not use any genetically modified seeds. Water usage through drip irrigation is monitored and is especially critical in Pune due to susceptibility to drought and poor water management.
